Synopsis | The night that Harry and Dumbledore return from the cave, the Death Eaters are delayed from reaching the top of the Astronomy Tower for one more minute. Draco Malfoy lowers his wand.
A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore's offer to fake his death and go into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix.
What if, on that fateful night atop the astronomy tower, after disarming Dumbledore, Draco lowered his wand, and accepted the headmaster’s offer for protection? What if, Draco reluctantly assisted the Golden Trio on their quest to hunt down and destroy the Horcruxes? What new insight could his pure-blood Slytherin mind bring to the mix?
This rewrite of the Deathly Hallows fit so well into the original story, and I think I honestly preferred it. It’s definitely a slow burn between Draco and Hermione, and in no ways a spicy story, but it was so good. Draco’s growth and development, paired with having to face his prejudices head on, felt very realistic and like it fit perfectly into the overall plot of the original series. He didn’t turn over a new leaf over night, and he eventually got to the point where he was finally making his own choices for himself, without trying to please his parents, or live up to the Malfoy name. Eventually he is forced to make a choice, cling to everything he’s ever known, his upbringing, his prejudices, the darkness, his former self? Or step fully into a new world, one where he can become the man he wants to be, and embrace this new life and love he’s somehow stumbled into.
Not fluffy, nor dark, or spicy. This well written fic was full of angst, inner turmoil, growth, an unexpected relationship, and loads of hard decisions, and it fit so well as an alternative to the original Deathly Hallows story.
